The Gift Is the Hour

“The best gift is a seat at the table.”

My Dearest Table Guests,

The best gift Prim gave anyone last year cost her nothing, and the woman who received it still has not stopped talking about it. No ribbon. No box. Nothing to dust, nothing to store, nothing that will end up at a tag sale in ten years with a sticker on it. And it beat every wrapped thing under that tree so completely that Prim has decided to let you in on it before you spend a single dollar this season.

Here is the secret the shops do not want you to know. The finest present in this entire game was never an object. It is an afternoon. It is the hour you sit down beside a woman who has always wanted to play, and you teach her to read the card, and you watch the exact moment it stops looking like a wall of numbers and starts looking like a map. Prim has watched that moment land on a grown woman’s face a hundred times and it gets her every time. You cannot buy it. You can only give it, by hand, and the giving costs you nothing but your afternoon, which is precisely why it is worth more than anything with a price tag.

It is the same reason Prim misses the days of getting letters from friends, a real envelope in a hand you would know anywhere, sent for no reason but that someone sat down and thought of you. Don’t you? Prim has been thinking about that more than she will admit. What it would mean to find something in the mailbox again with your own name on the front, in a hand that clearly took its time, and not a single political ad in sight.

So Prim is going to try something. It is called Prim’s Pen Pals: once a month, a real envelope in your own mailbox, a letter from Prim inside, and a few little mahjong somethings tucked in beside it. If that makes your heart skip the way it does hers, come and have a look and save your spot. There is no obligation and nothing to pay. Prim only wants to see who would like to hear from her by post, and she will keep you posted as the idea takes shape.
